Slow Travel in Lyon: Why Taking Your Time in the Gastronomic Capital Is the Best Decision of the Summer

Slow Travel in Lyon: Why Taking Your Time in the Gastronomic Capital Is the Best Decision of the Summer

There is one way to visit Lyon in 48 hours. Tick the boxes, take the photos, move on. And there is another way, one we see year after year in guests who extend their stay: the way that really begins on the third morning, when you no longer need an app to find your restaurant, when the sausage vendor at the Halles recognises you, when you have your table at the bouchon and your usual order waiting. The way Lyon stops being a destination and becomes, for a week, something that feels like a life.

At Boscolo Lyon, we call this slow travel. And we believe it is the best way to discover this city.

Why slow travel is becoming the new way to explore

Slow travel is not a new concept, but it is a new priority. After years of 36-hour city breaks and overloaded itineraries, travelers today are looking for less quantity and more presence, fewer monuments ticked off, more moments truly lived.

Lyon answers this need better than almost any other French city. Its richness is not in its facades, it is in its layers. The longer you stay, the more you understand. The more you understand, the more you love it. This is exactly what we see in guests who choose a stay of five nights or more: they do not visit Lyon, they inhabit it.

The Halles, the bouchons, the markets: a gastronomy that rewards those who linger

Lyon is not a city with a few good addresses, it is a city where every market, every counter, every bouchon tells you something about how people eat and live here.

Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, named the world's third-best market in 2026, deserve several visits on their own.

The Lyonnaise bouchons cannot be discovered in one evening, they are understood over time, as you begin to grasp the nuances between the houses and the seasons.

Croix-Rousse, Vieux Lyon, Confluences: neighbourhoods that are each a world apart

Renaissance Vieux-Lyon with its traboules, the Croix-Rousse with its silk-weaving history, the Presqu'île with its lively quays, the Confluences district with its contemporary architecture, each deserves its own day.

A week in Lyon is a week in four cities layered on top of each other.

The Beaujolais at 30km, the Alps an hour away: Lyon as a starting point

Thirty kilometres away, the Beaujolais unfolds its vines. An hour away, the Alps.

Lyon is an ideal base for excursions without ever changing hotels, a day among the vineyards, another in the villages of the Rhône valley, and every evening, returning to the same place.

Lyon does not rush you, and that is precisely what changes everything

Lyon does not rush you. Lyonnais live at a pace that leaves room, for conversation, for a meal that stretches on, for a glass ordered without checking the time.

This energy quickly rubs off on those who take the time to feel it.

Day by day: what a week of slow travel in Lyon actually looks like

Day 1: Arrival. Drop your bags at Boscolo Lyon and resist the urge to do everything on the first evening. Choose a bouchon at random in the 1st arrondissement, order a warm sausage and a carafe of Beaujolais, and let the city come to you.

Day 2: The Halles and Vieux-Lyon. Arrive at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse at opening time, when the atmosphere is still raw and authentic. In the afternoon, cross the Saône, push open the traboule doors, get lost in the Renaissance courtyards.

Day 3: The Croix-Rousse. The boulevard market in the morning, the neighbourhood's traboules in the afternoon, the Fresque des Lyonnais along the way, and a coffee on the montée to watch the life of the quarter.

Day 4: Beaujolais excursion. A day among the vines of Fleurie, Morgon or Moulin-à-Vent, just 30 minutes from the city. Lunch at a domaine, tasting at the source, two bottles to bring back for the evening.

Day 5: Culture and Confluences. The Musée des Confluences and its spectacular architecture in the morning, the Rhône riverbanks in the afternoon, the simplest, most Lyonnaise way to spend an afternoon.

Day 6: The great table. A gastronomic reservation planned since day one, experienced rested and fully present, after five days in the city, you arrive at the table already knowing the producers and the vineyards you have seen.

Day 7: Spa and a gentle departure. A final morning at the Boscolo Lyon Spa, a last breakfast, one final walk along the quays.

Slow travel: a smarter choice than you might think

Staying a week in a luxury hotel rather than three nights across three different hotels in three different cities is not only a deeper experience, it is often the smarter one. Our extended stay offers reflect this logic: discounts begin from 3 nights and become significant from 6 nights onward. This is the paradox of slow luxury, you spend better by taking your time.

There is also a hidden cost to hurried tourism: the restaurant mistakes made without time to research, the rushed visits that leave nothing behind. Slow travel removes that cost entirely. You remember a city better when you have had the time to inhabit it.

How Boscolo Lyon supports this rhythm

The hotel's central position means everything can be reached on foot or by public transport, the Halles, Vieux-Lyon, the Presqu'île and the Rhône riverbanks are all within walking distance, with no need for a car.

Our concierge team is designed for extended stays: reservations at the best bouchons, Beaujolais excursions organised on request, personalised recommendations as the days unfold. With I Prefer, the loyalty program of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, every stay at Boscolo comes with exclusive benefits and personalized privileges. Points earned can then be redeemed for complimentary nights, dining experiences, or wellness treatments.

Most of our slow travel guests come back, here is why

Guests who choose slow travel in Lyon do not visit a city, they begin a relationship with it. And most come back: for the bouchon where they were welcomed like regulars, for the Saturday market at the Croix-Rousse, for the view over the Rhône from the Duplex Suite. That rare feeling of having truly been somewhere.

Lyon is that kind of city. And we are the address from which you discover it best.
